Flame Ground

Flame Ground, the World’s First Burger King Flagship Store
Burger King’s Authenticity, Grounded in the History of Place
Flame Ground began with Burger King’s longstanding commitment to flame grilling and the authenticity inherent in that process. What distinguishes the brand lies not only in the finished Whopper, but also in how it is made. Inside the broiler, flame meets patty directly, while heat and grill marks give shape to its distinctive flavor and aroma. Flame Ground brings the fire, broiler, grill, and cooking process out from behind the kitchen and into the foreground of the spatial experience.
Rather than revealing the main hall immediately upon entry, a compressed transitional space evokes the sensation of stepping inside a broiler. Beyond it, the main hall translates the repetition and movement of cooking into kinetic art. These works are integral to the brand experience, interpreting tangible elements—the Whopper, broiler, grill, and charcoal—through each artist’s own language. At The Gastro, the experience becomes more concentrated. The Whopper is explored through a sequence of ingredients, preparation, aroma, and texture, directing attention toward the food and the act of cooking.
The brand’s history intersects with that of Seongsu, a neighborhood shaped over decades by factories, warehouses, and manufacturing. The project carries these traces forward through red brick, metal, and the building’s existing timber trusses. By retaining a low, single-story profile and leaving room for a courtyard, the architecture preserves its relationship with the surrounding city. The original trusses were also retained wherever possible, allowing the life of the former building to remain present within the new structure.
Red brick connects the project to Seongsu’s older architecture while recalling the elemental material character of a hearth built to contain fire. Varying gaps and depths within the brickwork establish a repeating rhythm drawn from the grill. By day, these openings admit natural light and shadow; by night, they allow the interior glow to filter into the city.
Hot-rolled steel and Corten steel connect Seongsu’s industrial memory with the metallic character of the broiler. These materials continue to evolve after completion. Exposed to time and weather, they gradually oxidize, accumulating reddish-brown traces across their dark surfaces and developing an affinity with the red brick. The transformation of the materials over time becomes part of the architecture itself.
Lighting follows the same principle. Light is focused on food, people, artworks, and materials, revealing the reflections of metal, the relief of brick, and the depth of charcoal. The guiding consideration was where to direct attention, rather than how brightly to illuminate the space. As daylight, artificial light, and shadow shift throughout the day, the space takes on different expressions.
Flame Ground translates the physical workings of fire, the marks left by the grill, and the transformation of materials over time into an architectural and spatial language. By layering Burger King’s enduring commitment to flame and flavor onto Seongsu’s accumulated history, the project makes the brand’s authenticity a tangible experience—something visitors encounter and feel firsthand.
